Is Jimmy Rollins the Dodgers’ next Kirk Gibson? Shortstop talks leadership, championship

first_imgRollins, who was acquired in a three-team trade with the San Diego Padres, also spoke openly about his desire to win another championship. He won his only World Series ring in 2008 after helping to eliminate the Dodgers in a memorable National League Championship Series.Asked if a “World Series or bust” mindset creates an unreasonable expectation, Rollins responded plainly, “Why not?”“Jimmy said, ‘I don’t want to go somewhere I could win but I wanted to go somewhere where winning would really mean something.’ I think that attitude is going to be contagious,” Dodgers general manager Farhan Zaidi said. “It’s a reason Jimmy was at the top of our list when we knew we needed a shortstop for next season.”Also like Gibson, Rollins is more than a leader. He’s a good baseball player with 2,306 career hits on his resumé. The potential of Rollins and Howie Kendrick manning the middle of the diamond has Zaidi excited, too. Only 20 shortstops in the history of baseball have turned more double plays in their career than Rollins. Kendrick has been a steady second baseman for the Angels the past nine seasons. To be considered an upgrade, all they have to do is turn more ground balls into outs than Hanley Ramirez and Dee Gordon did last season. This, more than chemistry, was the Dodgers’ offseason objective.“We were trying to create a team that was better defensively that was kind of geared toward pitching, defense and lineup balance,” Zaidi said. “I think the moves that we made reflected that. Everything we made was primarily driven by the on-field product and the kind of team we were trying to put on the field.”Still, the chemistry will change. Ramirez and Matt Kemp were often vocal, but not necessarily leaders. Gordon was quiet. Outfielder Yasiel Puig is not quiet, and some believe that reining in his personality will be a key challenge for whoever leads the room in 2015.Rollins was the longest-tenured Phillie when he was traded, Kendrick the longest-tenured Angel. So both men are used to leading the way for teammates through their words, example or both.“Nobody can lead just by talking,” Zaidi said. “Even a guy like Jimmy, who is vocal, has accomplished so much in the game, a lot of credibility comes from that, the kind of player he is. It’s certainly fun to have the vocal guy up there in the press conference because he can really carry a room. I think that’s going to help us in the daily grind of the season as well.” “Sorry Tommy,” Rollins added.Ironically, the Dodgers acquired Rollins for largely the same reason they acquired Gibson 27 years ago. The 36-year-old veteran has played 15 seasons in the major leagues, all with the Philadelphia Phillies. Rollins has spoken openly about his desire to be a clubhouse leader in his first year here, and the organization is encouraging it. Leadership was the first question that came up when he spoke with manager Don Mattingly, Rollins said.Tuesday, the shortstop referenced pitcher Clayton Kershaw and first baseman Adrian Gonzalez and spoke of being a “third wheel.” He talked about being “the glue that holds everything together,” a role that acknowledges the potential for everything to fall apart.“It starts with respect first,” Rollins said. “If they respect you they’re going to listen. They’ll figure out if you’re talking a whole bunch of hot air or if what you’re saying makes sense. Hopefully they figure out what I’m saying makes sense.” On Jan. 29, 1988, the Dodgers signed free-agent slugger Kirk Gibson. The team was talented but undisciplined, and the front office wanted a vocal leader in the clubhouse.Gibson fit the description to a tee. He wound up winning the National League MVP award and leading the Dodgers to a championship in his first season in Los Angeles. The Dodgers haven’t been back to the World Series since.New Dodgers shortstop Jimmy Rollins was a young Oakland A’s fan in 1988. “I didn’t like the Dodgers,” Rollins said at his introductory press conference Wednesday, then looked up to see Tommy Lasorda sitting a few feet away. center_img Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Errorlast_img read more

Princess Cruises Drops Port Everglades Contractor After Coronavirus Cases

first_imgThe company whose staff may have exposed up to 50,000 travelers to the coronavirus has had its contract for work at Port Everglades dropped by a popular cruise line.Three of the first four people who tested positive for the virus in Broward County worked for Metro Cruise Services, which provided guest services for Princess Cruises in Fort Lauderdale.Port Everglades spokeswoman Ellen Kennedy said Wednesday that Princess Cruises officials informed her they have stopped using the contractor and have replaced it with another company. On Tuesday, health officials revealed that three part-time employees of Metro Cruise Services tested positive for coronavirus. With that, travelers who were planning to board the Caribbean Princess on Wednesday for a 10-day trip to the Panama Canal were notified by email late Tuesday that their cruise was cancelled. The email attributed the cancellation to an anticipated shortage of labor at the port.Kennedy explains that Princess Cruises was concerned it might not have enough time to fill all the positions in time for Wednesday’s voyage.Princess Cruises will provide full refunds of the cruise fare and any related travel booked through the company, in addition to giving passengers full credit for a future cruise over the next year. The company also operates the Diamond Princess, which was quarantined for two weeks early this year in Japan after 700 of its passengers contracted coronavirus. In recent days, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had placed two Princess Cruises ships under “no-sail” orders, preventing them from docking at U.S. ports. One was the Caribbean Princess, which remained off the coast of Port Everglades after health officials discovered that two of the ship’s crew members had worked aboard its sister ship, Grand Princess, which was struck with coronavirus in California.Tests of the two Caribbean Princess workers came back negative, allowing the ship to dock before dawn Wednesday at Port Everglades. The cruise line’s next scheduled departure from that port is Saturday, when the Sky Princess is set to begin a seven-day Western Caribbean trip.last_img read more

Leafs, Hawks meet in Murdoch Showdown

first_img“I definitely have got to play with more discipline,” St. Pierre said after the Fernie game.“I thought (check) was clean but I can’t be taking risks like that anymore and I’m certainly starting to understand that now.”Despite losing twice during his last suspension — 6-5 in overtime to Castlegar and 5-2 to Grand Forks — St. Pierre is confident the Leafs can get the job done without their captain.“We’ve got a full defensive lineup now so that’s going to help the blueline but we also have a really strong leadership group I trust will easily make up for my absence and show be able to do a fine job without me,” he said.Joining St. Pierre in the stands is converted defenceman Blair Andrews, also serving a two-game suspension for the game accumulation of head contact minor penalties.Vlanich on way to Selkirk Saints next seasonFill the net and scouts will come calling.Which is why no one is surprised by the Selkirk Saints announcing earlier this week the Castlegar-based squad has received a commitment to play next fall from Trail native Jamie Vlanich. The 20-year-old sniper leads the KIJHL in scoring with 32 goals and 58 assists in 41 games.Vlanich also notched his 200th point during Saturday’s 5-1 win over Fernie.BV assistant suspended for abuse of an officialBeaver Valley Nitehawks will be a little short staffed on the bench for the weekend set against Nelson as assistant coach Jeremy Cominotto was handed a gross misconduct following the Hawks 3-1 loss to Fernie January 31.Cominotto is suspended for the next three games for abuse of an official. Falcarragh business community invited to meet Irish Water this week

first_imgMembers of the business community in Falcarragh have been invited to attend a meeting this week ahead of major water replacement works in the region. It is understood that Irish Water is set to begin their planned water main replacement project in the west Donegal area in two sections. The first section will invloved the replacement of the 1.7km of replacement pipe from the Cashel Reservoir in Gortahork, while section two will see 1.5km of water mains replacement from the Cashel Reservoir in Falcarragh. Councillors were told earlier this year that Irish Water was committed to delivering water improvement works in Falcarragh as financial approval had been given to progress this through the National Leakage Reduction Programme.A number of businesses in the west Donegal town have been plunged into consistent water issues for well over a year due to old pipe connections, forcing many to close their doors over the busy summertime period. The meeting will take place this Friday, September 6 at 2pm in the Falcarragh Community Hall.Falcarragh business community invited to meet Irish Water this week was last modified: September 2nd, 2019 by Shaun KeenanShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)last_img read more
