Port Elizabeth stadium is still in the running to host Confederation Cup matches in 2009. (Image: Fifa)Tamara O’ReillyFollowing inspection tours of the five stadiums that are being prepared for the 2010 World Cup by Fifa and the Local Organising Committee (LOC), it was announced that all stadiums being used for the main event will also be considered for the Confederations Cup in 2009.This was particularly good news for the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Port Elizabeth as concerns over its readiness to host Confederations Cup matches were raised during an inspection in November 2007, and in March this year the board of directors kept a watchful eye on Port Elizabeth. The R1.2 billion stadium with a 48 000 seating capacity is the only one being built from scratch and has been given until March 2009 to complete construction while the deadline for the other stadiums is December 2008.Speaking at a briefing following a marathon two-day board meeting, Irvin Khoza, chairman of the LOC, said the decision to retain Port Elizabeth as one of the host cities for the Confederations Cup was buoyed by the acceleration of construction since concerns were first raised.“At this stage all five stadiums are still in. We are placing tight monitoring on all of them and if by any chance any of them fails to comply with the agreed deadlines, they will be removed from the Fifa Confederations Cup schedule,” says Khoza. “Port Elizabeth is a new stadium and that’s why we have been patient with them. Recently they accelerated the process, which gives us comfort. That the Fifa Confederations Cup is a success is a matter of national pride.”To ensure that stadiums are delivered according to Fifa technical requirements and timelines, the progress of all five stadiums will be closely monitored by the LOC Technical Team. The department of Sport and Recreation and the Department of Public Works will also join in the monitoring. The 2009 Confederations Cup, or the Cup of Champions as it is commonly known, will take place in South Africa from 14 to 18 June. It is contested by the winners of each of the six Fifa confederation championships including the 2006 world champions Italy as well as winners of Fifa’s European and Asian tournaments. It is imperative that the deadlines given to the stadiums are met as tickets can only be sold once seat locations are known. The match draws will take place in November and tickets will go on sale soon afterwards.LinksMandela Metro SA 2010
Share Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest 180320_RyanMartinSome slight changes to the outlook this morning, as moisture seems to be bent on drifting a bit farther north. We still do not see anything working north of I-70 this morning, but we have to allow for a better spread of moisture from I-70 southward. Rain this morning will try to end as snow early this afternoon, particularly from central Ohio east toward the PA line. NW Ohio sees nothing today, and most of north central Ohio is devoid of precipitation as well. However, northeast Ohio can pick up some light snow later this afternoon.Cold air stays over the state behind this system for tomorrow through early Friday morning. Wrap around cloud cover and moisture will be in overnight tonight through tomorrow and likely brings accumulating snow to a large part of the state. Accumulations of a coating to 3 or 4” are likely with 80% coverage through tomorrow. The map above is one model depiction of snow…and it is likely over done on the 5-6-7 and 8 inch snow totals…but it does show a good geographical coverage of snow here. This map also puts the snow way too far to the west too…but you get the idea: from tonight through tomorrow, it is not going to act like spring at all anywhere in Ohio. Snow ends tomorrow night as the nor’easter for the east coast moves north and away. It stays cold through Thursday, and temps moderate some by Friday as south winds arrive ahead of the next front. That system moves in for Saturday midday through Sunday morning. Latest models are shifting the heavier precipitation farther south out of this event. Right now we will keep rain totals of .25”-5” the southern half of the state, but are ready to give the northern half a pass for the time being. In the south, we have to be prepared to see the precipitation end as wet snow again, with minor accumulations.Dry for Monday of next week, but we have another system coming in for overnight Monday night through Tuesday. This event can bring .25”-.75” precipitation to 70% of the state, with the heaviest action seen over central and southwest Ohio. The map above shows a snapshot of early Monday morning. Then we take a minor break with dry weather Tuesday night and Wednesday, followed by another batch of scattered showers for Thursday, adding another .25” over 60% of the state.Moderate to heavy rains arrive for Easter weekend on the 31st and 1st. We are raising rain totals to .5”- 2” over 100% of the state. This will be a very moisture laden system. But then we go dry for the 2nd through the 5th for the remainder of the extended forecast window. The rest of the extended window has a system for Easter weekend on the 31st and 1st, bringing .25”-75” rain potential to about 70% of the state. However, temps look to stay normal to slightly above normal for the entire extended period.

A spokesman said Nike has begun an investigation into what it called an “isolated” event.“Shoes have failed before, but not as visibly,” said Matt Powell, a senior industry adviser for sports for the NPD Group, a market research firm. Private companies step in to help SEA Games hosting Playing before a crowd littered with celebrities — from Spike Lee to former President Barack Obama — Williamson was hurt in the opening minute of the game as his Nike PG 2.5, from Oklahoma City Thunder star Paul George’s signature sneaker line, tore apart. Williamson wears that model frequently during games and hadn’t had any obvious problems. The 280-pound Williamson is one of the most powerful players in the game, and he tried to plant with his left foot as his right foot was slipping. The blue rubber sole ripped loose from the white shoe and Williamson’s foot came all the way through the large gap. He ended up in an awkward-almost-split, clutching the back of his right knee . He walked to the bench and a few minutes later headed to the locker room, leaving the wrecked shoe under his chair.George said Thursday that he has talked with Nike to see what went wrong and what happened to the shoe.“It hasn’t happened to me as long as I’ve been in this shoe,” George said. “We’ve made three generations, going on four now of my shoe, of being successful. So I didn’t necessarily feel any way about that part — the negative part of it. My only concern was for Zion, honestly.”Since Duke is a Nike-sponsored school, Williamson has his choice of that company’s footwear.ADVERTISEMENT MOST READ LATEST STORIES NBA, union forward talks on ending ‘one-and-done’ Urgent reply from Philippine football chief Duke’s Zion Williamson sits on the floor following a injury during the first half of an NCAA college basketball game against North Carolina, in Durham, N.C., Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2019. That’s what I thought happened. He goes so fast that maybe if there’s something slippery, that happened.”The injury also set off a fresh round of debate about whether Williamson — the possible No. 1 overall pick in the NBA draft, should he leave Duke after his freshman season — would be wise to end his college season in an attempt to avoid an injury that could jeopardize his pro career. NBA Hall of Famer Scottie Pippen made the case for it a month ago, saying on ESPN that “I would shut it down.”Asked to respond on Feb. 5 to those comments, Williamson turned to his locker room sidekick, walk-on Mike Buckmire, and asked, “Buck, would you hate me if I shut down the season?“I couldn’t do that to my teammates,” Williamson continued. “Again, thank you for, like, seeing the confidence in me and the type of player I can become. But I love college too much to stop playing. I wouldn’t give this up.”Now that he’s actually hurt, it’s unknown if his feelings have changed. It’s also unclear, if he decides to continue his college career, whether Williamson has an insurance policy to protect him in case of injury like many other elite college athletes have purchased.DeGeorge on Thursday could not confirm a report by Action Network that Williamson had an $8 million loss of value policy written by Winston-Salem-based International Specialty Insurance that would pay out if he slipped past the 16th pick in this June’s draft. Officials at ISI did not return telephone and email messages Thursday.Loss of value polices are not offered by the NCAA, but the governing body does offer disability insurance.Spokeswoman Stacey Osburn said the NCAA allows schools to purchase loss of value policies on a player’s behalf. She added that the NCAA also facilitates a disability insurance program for players in five sports, including men’s basketball, in which athletes can purchase policies with preapproved financing to protect against future loss of earnings due to injuries suffered in college. Duke spokesman Jon Jackson said the university does provide the resource for athletes to purchase policies in limited cases but declined to comment on specific instances. There are no NCAA restrictions on how much insurance a player can purchase, or if the player wants both types of policies, Osburn said. Lattimore never played in an NFL game but only received about $270,000 from the policy, in part because he did get a signing bonus when he was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the fourth round. He purchased the policy prior to his sophomore season in 2011 then renewed it the following year. That season he dislocated his knee in a game suffered several torn ligaments when he was tackled.
