qualifier Manager Age Hareide gave Bendtner currently plying his trade at Norwegian side Rosenborg his first competitive start for almost two years and the striker repaid his coach’s faith with a lively if sometimes ragged display With group rivals Poland taking an early lead against Montenegro the Danes knew that they could no longer win the group but Bendtner and Pione Sisto were keen to give the sell-out crowd at the Parken Stadium their money’s worth Sisto let fly with a stinging shot from distance on the half-hour mark that was touched over the bar for a corner and moments later Bendtner missed a glorious chance to put Denmark in front as his shot was blocked by a last-ditch tackle Shortly after the 29-year-old former Arsenal and Juventus striker had the ball in the net but rail map This journey must not stop here Itanagar the capital of Arunachal Pradesh was finally brought on to the railway map of India as the first passenger train arrived at the Naharlagun railway station nearby from Dekargaon in Assam This train service had been announced by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in his package for the state in January 2008 and had missed its December 2011 deadline Its importance for the landlocked Northeast cannot be discounted Itanagar is now the second state capital in the Northeast to be connected by railroad In time the Rajdhani and Shatabdi Express services will be extended to link Arunachal with the national capital This is a belated but much-awaited leap for a region economically deprived not only because of its limited geographical access to markets and the mainland but also due to decades of Central inattention and neglect The railroad will now meet two imperatives — the larger need to enhance the Northeast’s connectivity and the urgency to upgrade India’s border infrastructure The necessity of better rail and road links was underlined by Manipur’s protracted blockades of 2010-11 which cut off a state that sits at the ends of NH 39 and NH 53 On the other hand Arunachal shares a 1000 km border with China that Beijing can reach faster than Delhi A transport and infrastructure project in the Northeast therefore cannot be seen in isolation In this context the ongoing upgrade of the Imphal and Agartala airports will add to the region’s lone international airport in Guwahati and serviced by the proposed airstrips across the Northeast end dangerous helicopter travel in remote areas The greenfield airport being built near Gangtok in Sikkim will further strengthen border infrastructure The next government will have to hit the ground running on projects important for the Northeast Linking the landlocked region to Myanmar’s Sittwe port and Bangladesh’s Chittagong port is vital for its economic well-being The bus service between Imphal and Mandalay and integrating the Northeast with the trans-Asian highway system require the Centre to actively supervise the projects New Delhi must also deliver on the Land Boundary Agreement and the Teesta water accord to get the railway corridor through Bangladesh that will cut the distance between Kolkata and Agartala to a fifth making the spread of rail networks in the Northeast truly worthwhile For all the latest Opinion News download Indian Express App More Related NewsUpdated: March 28 2014 9:18 am Russian President Vladimir Putin (Reuters) Related News Isolating Russia like Iran or North Korea is not a threat the US can make good on THE United States has once again twisted itself into a rhetorical pretzel As when it threatened military action against Syria if a “red line” was crossed the Obama administration’s rhetoric about Russia and Ukraine goes far beyond what it will be willing and able to enforce Earlier this month President Obama warned that America would “isolate Russia” if it grabbed more land and [Wednesday] he suggested that more sanctions were possible Likewise Secretary of State John Kerry said the Group of 7 nations were “prepared to go to the hilt” in order to isolate Russia But Washington’s rhetoric is dangerously excessive for three main reasons: Ukraine is far more important to Vladimir V Putin than it is to America; it will be hard for the United States and Europe to make good on their threats of crippling sanctions; and other countries could ultimately defang them First the US needs to see the Ukraine crisis from Russia’s viewpoint Threats from America and Europe will never be the determining factor in Putin’s decision-making Ukraine is Russia’s single biggest national security issue beyond its borders and Putin’s policy including whether to seize more of Ukraine will be informed overwhelmingly by national security interests not near-term economics Furthermore Russia has provided Ukraine with some $200-$300 billion in natural gas subsidies since 1991 With an anti-Russian government in Ukraine Moscow is likely to stop these subsidies lifting a major economic burden just as the West tries to squeeze it financially Second if Russia pushes farther into Ukraine America’s attempt at tougher Iran-style sanctions coordinated with allies will ultimately fail Indeed if Putin pursues a broader military campaign a similarly robust response from both America and Europe is unlikely Russia’s energy exports its commercial power and its sheer size make the costs of ignoring it prohibitively high for Europe Despite the Group of 7’s recent exclusion of Russia the Europeans don’t want to go to extremes And finally even if America seeks stringent sanctions against Russia other nations will ignore them and offset any damage they cause India absolutely refuses to treat Russia like a rogue state More important China will not observe such sanctions The fundamental problem is that the Obama administration doesn’t want to bear the costs associated with an active foreign policy That’s understandable A December Pew poll revealed the lowest level of public support for an active American foreign policy since 1964 This domestic pressure was on display in Syria Obama’s error was not that he backed away from military action and accepted Russia’s proposal to rid Syria of chemical weapons The mistake was that he drew a red line that would have been more costly to back up than the US was willing to tolerate America lost credibility internationally for failing to make good on its threat Unfortunately the Obama administration is repeating this mistake in Ukraine When Russia proceeded with the annexation of Crimea the US and Europe responded with punitive measures that had some economic impact But they did not by any means “go to the hilt” Instead the Americans and Europeans drew an even deeper line in the sand issuing empty threats of sweeping sanctions if Russia tried to grab more territory in Ukraine Such sharp rhetoric from the West could push Putin to be even more aggressive That’s because he does not believe that the West would ever treat Russia like Iran and implement robust sanctions that would cut off vast areas of Russia’s economy from the West As Putin recently explained in a globalised world “it’s possible to damage each other — but this would be mutual damage” “Isolating Russia” as if it were Iran or North Korea isn’t a threat America can feasibly make good on Just because Putin is acting like the leader of a rogue state his country cannot be considered as such Russia boasts the world’s eighth-largest economy Given the exposure of American corporations to Russia there would be serious pushback from the private sector if Obama tried to relegate Russia to rogue-state status The Obama administration needs to preach what it will ultimately practise Otherwise Washington’s credibility will erode further as it walks back its words A more hard-line response is not the answer The Obama administration should focus on supporting Kiev rather than punishing Moscow That means using its leverage with Europe to ensure that this support sticks and that Ukraine’s new government does nothing to provoke an extreme response This will require an acknowledgement of Russia’s core interests and America’s limitations — and an end to empty threats Swiss Open in 2016 which was followed by another toe injury at the Singapore Open This year Prannoy showed some remarkable form at the Premier Badminton League but his previous injuries again came to haunt him Asked if he is in his best form of the career now Prannoy said: “Best I am not sure I believe I have a lot of capability and I can play at a much better level Of course there have been restrictions on me since I had a lot of injuries So I can’t do some specific training due to those injuries” Prannoy also faced criticism regarding his dip in form and following all the remarks one coach even said that “he will never be able to play singles as he was slow and he should shift to doubles” “People may criticise saying that I have such a good game but I’ve not been able to be consistent I feel they need to understand that there are so many injuries that we suffer which they don’t know about and each time to come back train and reach top 20 is not easy” Prannoy said in an interview to PTI “Sometimes you get demotivated as to why so many injuries are happening but that is how it is some have a lot of injuries and some have less Look at Sameer he too had a lot of injuries and he would have been a much better player Injuries take away a lot of time” he added Prannoy said that sometimes he self-doubt during first round of a tournament “For me the first round is really important I always play a bit half-heartedly in the first round and doubt myself if I will be able to control the shuttle” “Once I crack the first round if I am getting into the zone and really feel good about the conditions then I feel it could be my day After I cross the pre-quarters I get better so that’s how my game goes” he added Prannoy said now he is really confident regarding his fitness and even when he was training ahead of the Indonesia Open “The confidence that fitness gives is completely different I felt that after I left Malaysia and Singapore midway and I was training and trying not to get injured I played at the ABC in China and again was back to training It was the only time when I was feeling my body is good and I was raring to go but that feeling doesn’t happen all the time “Others don’t need to worry about injuries they can just concentrate on things on court But I am happy with the way things are going now I am happy the way I come back after each injury and I might not have won a tournament but I always believe something big will happen and when things do not go my way I am patient enough to hang in there” he said On being asked about preparing for back-to-back tournaments Prannoy said: “We don’t do anything new during the tournament It is all about polishing what you have you have to ensure that endurance doesn’t go down “We keep trying new shots so that if required you can use them I have so many new shots in my game but I might not use them always and the thing is you might forget if you don’t practice So you have to keep doing it in practice” he concluded For all the latest Sports News download Indian Express App IE Online Media Services Pvt Ltd More Related NewsWritten by Arita Sarkar | Mumbai | Published: September 15 2017 8:05
